Furthermore, cooking at a rental property, and only dining out once a day, can keep costs down, as this is often one of the most expensive parts of a vacation, Johnson writes.
The extensive European rail network offers an affordable way to get around the continent, and when in larger cities, entry fees for major attractions can often be bundled together using a city pass, Johnson writes. The Rome Pass, for example, offers entry to two of six historical sites, discounts on 30 others and access to public transport for the day, she writes.
Despite the temptation of doing as much sightseeing as possible, try to choose one main attraction per day to avoid multiple entry fees and worn-out kids, Johnson writes. There are also many free attractions such as parks, local festivals and city landmarks where kids can play while parents unwind, she writes.
