(MarketWatch) A federal whistleblower is alleging possible improper interference with the IRS process of auditing President Donald Trump's tax returns, according to multiple reports Wednesday. In separate reports, Politico and NBC News said the federal worker made the allegations to the House Ways and Means Committee, citing a court motion by House Democrats in their lawsuit to force the release of Trump's tax returns.
According to NBC News, the court filing included a letter from committee chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, which said the House panel "received an unsolicited communication from a federal employee setting forth credible allegations of 'evidence of possible misconduct' - specifically, potential 'inappropriate efforts to influence the mandatory audit program.'" Details of potential interference were not mentioned.
According to Politico, Mnuchin told Neal he had no information about that, and suggested the concerns be brought to the IRS inspector general.
